First of all, thank you for signing up as a beta reader. If you enjoy any of the work that I do then your keen eye will only make it better.

In a second, you’ll be receiving from me an email that will ask for you to confirm your spot as in RIU Beta Reader. Go ahead and confirm that and you will be part of the team.

I want to give you a brief recap on what you can expect to do as a beta reader for the RIU. I don’t ask for much. The only thing that I am truly concerned with is that you get your edited copy back to me in the allotted time. If you can’t, it’s no big deal, just get to me what it is that you’ve finished.

What I’ll be expecting from beta readers is just a simple proofread. If you want to go above and beyond and note some other things (grammar, continuity flubs, etc) that you see are inconsistent, by all means, be my guest. I just want to let you know that it’s not absolutely necessary.

I’ll go ahead and repeat the process so that you will get an idea of what to expect.

You’ll receive a first round edit of the story in a digital format. Also, you’ll receive a timeline when this should be sent back to me. Normally that may be anywhere from a couple of days for short stories to weeks for a whole novel. I’ll try to give as much lead time as I possibly can to make it possible to go through the whole thing. You will then send your edited digital copy back to me, highlighting the suggested edits in red. I will take a look at all of the edits you have highlighted and make the appropriate changes if necessary. Then I will go through and re-edit and send out that final edit to all RIU beta readers. Beta readers always get a free digital copy of the book in question as long as they completely finish a full edit of the book within the timeframe that I’ve asked.

That’s it.

Beta readers also get an opportunity to receive the work at a discounted rate in hard copy if one is available and also will be listed in the acknowledgments by name if so desired.

Just as a side note: as an RIU Beta Reader, you are not a part of the RIU Citizenship proper where I send out other announcements and other specials like book bundles, promotions, and other interactive goodies. If you’d like to be a part of that, just click on the link below:

Make Me an R.I.U. Citizen!

So, go ahead and check your email, confirm your spot, and then keep an eye out for my announcements in your inbox. Make sure that my email address is in your contacts list so it isn’t considered spam.

Thanks again. See you in the Tapestry!
